The Challenge

Netvisor's entire financial management platform, serving approximately 45,000 businesses, was running in a traditional datacenter. The infrastructure limited scaling speed, development agility, and disaster recovery options. A complete datacenter exit was needed, on an ambitious timeline, without disrupting the service businesses depend on every day.

Our Solution

Cloud2 partnered with Netvisor and AWS to execute a full datacenter exit using the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP). Daily three-way collaboration between Cloud2, Netvisor, and AWS drove fast decision-making and efficient execution across a massive volume of databases and data.

About Netvisor

Netvisor is a Finnish financial management software platform serving approximately 45,000 businesses, and part of Visma, one of Europe’s leading software companies. It provides invoicing, bookkeeping, payroll, and other financial management tools as a cloud-based service.

The Challenge

Netvisor had been running its platform in a traditional datacenter environment. The system worked, but the limitations were becoming clear. Scaling up required physical hardware changes that took days or weeks. Disaster recovery depended on a single geographic location. And the pace of product development was constrained by infrastructure that could not keep up with what the development team wanted to build.

The decision was straightforward: move the entire Netvisor platform to the public cloud. Not a partial migration. Not a hybrid approach. A complete datacenter exit.

That decision came with real complexity. Netvisor handles sensitive financial data for tens of thousands of businesses. Every record, every transaction, every payroll run matters. The platform runs around the clock. And the sheer volume of databases and data made this one of those projects where scale itself becomes the primary technical challenge.

On top of that, the timeline was ambitious. Netvisor needed the migration done efficiently, without dragging the project across quarters or years. The goal was clear: get to the cloud quickly, safely, and without disrupting the service that businesses depend on every day.

Why Cloud2

Cloud2 came into the project as the technical implementation partner, working alongside Netvisor’s own team and AWS. But the role went beyond writing migration scripts and moving databases. Cloud2 brought deep expertise in how to architect cloud environments according to best practices, and how to make the right choices when it comes to migration approaches, security architecture, and operational design.

The project followed the AWS Migration Acceleration Program, known as MAP. This is a structured methodology that AWS uses for large migrations, built around three phases: Assess, Mobilize, and Migrate and Modernize. The MAP framework provided the structure. What made the difference was how all three parties executed within that structure. MAP also provides financial support to offset the initial costs of migration, which makes the business case for a datacenter exit significantly easier to build. The combination of proven methodology, direct AWS engineering support, and migration funding removes many of the barriers that keep organizations stuck in their existing infrastructure.

Our Solution

The word “collaboration” gets used loosely in project descriptions. In this case, it was literal. Cloud2 engineers and Netvisor’s team were on calls together daily, working through problems in real time. When issues came up, they were solved the same day, not queued for the next sprint review. AWS provided direct technical support alongside both teams.

“The best thing about this project was the collaboration. Specifically the three-way collaboration between us, the customer, and AWS. We were on the line together every day, solving problems, making decisions. Everyone put in more than what was asked. The shared goal was clear and everyone pushed toward it.”

Tuomo Tomperi, Cloud2

This was not a handoff model where one party does the design, another does the build, and a third does the validation. All three worked together throughout, including through the summer holiday season when projects typically slow down. The pace never dropped. Cloud2 handled the technical execution while advising on architectural decisions. Netvisor brought deep knowledge of their own platform and data. AWS provided the MAP framework and direct engineering support.

The daily working rhythm meant that decisions happened fast. When the team hit a technical question about migration approaches for specific database types, the answer came within hours, not days. When security architecture needed to be validated, Cloud2 could draw on its experience running cloud environments for regulated industries and apply best practices immediately.

Handling sensitive financial data at scale

Netvisor processes financial data for approximately 45,000 businesses. GDPR compliance is a given, but the security considerations went further than regulatory minimums. Cloud2 worked with Netvisor to implement cloud security best practices across the entire environment.

All customer data now sits within AWS services in the EU/EEA region. The data is encrypted, redundant, and backed by automated operations that monitor the environment around the clock.

Benefits

The immediate result is speed. Everything is faster. Scaling capacity that used to take days now takes hours. The development team can move more quickly because the infrastructure supports their pace instead of constraining it. New features and improvements can reach customers sooner.

Reliability improved as well. With redundant data storage and automated failover, Netvisor’s uptime and resilience are at a level that a single datacenter could never match. Whether the disruption is a zonal incident, a hardware failure, or an infrastructure issue, the system is designed to keep running.

“The success of the project is demonstrated by the fact that we were able to migrate Netvisor to the new service platform over the course of a single weekend. This allowed us to keep the service disruption for our customers to a minimum.”

Vilppu Paananen, Engineering Manager, Netvisor

Hard cost savings numbers are not the headline here. The value shows up in how the team works: faster development cycles, better resilience, stronger security, and an infrastructure that grows with the business instead of holding it back.

What this means for organizations considering a datacenter exit

Netvisor’s migration demonstrates something that many organizations considering a datacenter exit need to hear: it can be done efficiently and safely, even when the platform is large, the data is sensitive, and the service cannot afford downtime.

The ingredients are straightforward. A proven methodology like AWS MAP. A technical partner with real migration experience at scale. A customer team that commits to the daily work of making decisions together. And a shared understanding that this is not a technology project alone. It is a business transformation that requires everyone at the table.

There is also a broader point worth making. A datacenter exit is rarely just about moving what you have. Once you are in the cloud, you gain access to capabilities that simply do not exist in a traditional datacenter: AI and machine learning services, advanced analytics, and the ability to experiment with new technologies at low cost and low risk. The migration itself solves today’s infrastructure problems. The platform it creates opens the door to what comes next.

“When the right people are in the room and everyone knows what they are doing, migration is efficient. The MAP program gives you the framework. Having the right partners gives you the execution. That combination is what makes it work.”
