Everway is dedicated to helping people understand and be understood. Since 2005, the company has developed innovative, user-friendly tools to promote literacy. Over the years, Everway's solutions have become the go-to choice for schools and municipalities throughout Denmark, benefiting over 1 million users. Everway aims to empower 1 billion people by 2030, fostering greater communication and learning opportunities worldwide.

When Everway needed a new digital infrastructure, they turned to Cloud2. “I asked for recommendations from my network, and Cloud2’s name came up. As we started discussing the project, I got a very good feeling about Cloud2 and their expert," says Bo Visfeldt, Vice President of Engineering at Everway.

The project came with a tight deadline: the new infrastructure had to be fully operational within just two months. Cloud2 rolled up their sleeves and got to work.

Creating a Resilient Infrastructure Under Pressure

Everways’ applications play a vital role during exams, used by students in Denmark in grades eight through ten during two intense weeks of final exams each year. The tests begin at 9 a.m., and every student logs in at the exact same time, causing a massive surge in traffic.

“Cloud2’s expert had a calm, ‘don’t panic’ attitude and he reassured us they would fix the infrastructure.”

The previous infrastructure struggled to handle this demand. “In normal situations, the applications work well. But during exams, the system experiences 50 times its normal load within just 30 seconds. This is difficult to manage, and the peak of users would cause the system to crash. That is, of course, unacceptable,” explains Visfeldt.

“We were in a hurry,” Visfeldt adds. “But Cloud2’s expert had a calm, ‘don’t panic’ attitude and he reassured us they would fix the infrastructure. That confidence was something I truly valued in such a pressing situation.”

The Right Technology for Rapid Scaling

Cloud2 conducted a thorough analysis and recommended an infrastructure tailored to Everway’s needs. Cloud2 proposed Amazon ECS Fargate to Everway instead of the initially planned EKS solution. This decision was based on performance data showing that ECS Fargate scaled faster and more effectively for their needs. ECS Fargate could scale to 3,500 containers in just over five minutes, compared to eight minutes for EKS on Fargate. Additionally, ECS Fargate offered precise, granular scaling based on traffic metrics, enabling different services to scale independently during high-demand exam times.

The migration process was seamless since ECS and EKS both use the same container image format from Amazon's Elastic Container Registry (ECR). Everway’s team simply redirected their existing, tested container images to ECS without needing any modifications. This saved valuable time during the tight two-month implementation deadline and minimized migration risks. Beyond addressing the immediate needs related to the exam period, ECS Fargate simplified operations by eliminating cluster management, freeing Everway’s team to focus on their applications instead of infrastructure.

“Cloud2’s expert really knew what he was doing,” Visfeldt praises. “I had a small team of programmers who adjusted the program based on his specifications. Meanwhile, our test departments ran continuous load tests under his guidance. Cloud2 brought the knowledge, showed us what to do, and we provided the resources to make it happen.”

A Trusted Partner for a Critical Task

The new infrastructure provided a flawless performance during the 2024 exam period. For the first time, the applications worked without any issues, and Everway received no complaints from users.

“Cloud2 spent two days training our employees to ensure we could maintain and manage everything ourselves. That’s incredible service.”

“We had no issues whatsoever,” Visfeldt says proudly. “But Cloud2 didn’t stop there. They went beyond simply building a robust infrastructure—they spent two days training our employees to ensure we could maintain and manage everything ourselves. That’s incredible service. Our cooperation with Cloud2 continues, and I truly enjoy working with them.”

Reflecting on the project, Visfeldt shares valuable advice: “You need to recognize when you don’t have the capability or knowledge to handle something internally. If we had tried to do this on our own, it would have taken six months, and the result would have been uncertain.”

“You need to recognize when you don’t have the capability or knowledge to handle something internally.”

Thanks to Cloud2’s expertise, Everway now has a reliable and scalable infrastructure, ensuring their applications continue to empower students and educators across Denmark and beyond.
