Challenge

iLOQ's international expansion required a major shift in their operations. To handle the growing number of users and data, they needed a global service with ample room for scalability in the future.

Quality, reliability, accessibility, security, and privacy were top priorities, as iLOQ is known for its locking and access management systems.

Traditional data center solutions were no longer viable. After comparing cloud services, iLOQ chose AWS for its flexible and scalable platform. However, this cloud migration was a significant strategic decision, and its success was deemed critical. Therefore, iLOQ felt the need to partner with someone who had sufficient expertise and experience. This led them to seek out deeper expertise beyond their own team.

Solution

Cloud2’s expertise met iLOQ's expectations. As a partner, we helped them navigate the AWS ecosystem and ensured the technical solutions were both effective and secure.

A system initially built on data center resources now runs on AWS. In the ongoing maintenance phase, iLOQ can trust that their cloud infrastructure stays up-to-date, secure, and aligned with current best practices.

The flexible and functional solution was built from several components:

  • AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP):

    • The MAP program was central to the migration process. It enables an accelerated and efficient cloud migration but requires special qualifications from the AWS partner. Cloud2 is one of the few Finnish firms capable of utilizing AWS’s financial programs at this level.

    • As an experienced AWS partner, we recommended using the MAP program to benefit iLOQ, which was a key reason they chose Cloud2.

  • Landing Zone:

    • Before the actual migration, we built a strong foundation in the cloud. This was quickly and easily achieved using the ready-made "Landing Zone" solution.

    • The foundation was designed and implemented according to AWS best practices and the Security Reference Architecture (SRA) model. This ensured that iLOQ’s system could efficiently and securely use cloud resources.

  • Architecture Overhaul:

    • AWS made it possible: it was time to move from a monolithic structure toward a microservices architecture.

    • iLOQ’s system was divided into smaller, logical components using AWS native services.

    • iLOQ's Microsoft SQL database was replaced with PostgreSQL and migrated to the AWS RDS service.

    • This reduced monthly costs and eliminated the limitations caused by the MS SQL service.

Benefits

Service development is now more flexible and scalable. The benefits are visible in both technical and business aspects. Service quality has improved, and the organization has been able to focus on its core competencies.

Here are some highlights of the transformation project:

  • Improved Quality: Cloud2's AWS Well-Architected Review (WARF) assessments have been crucial in ensuring quality. These assessments guarantee that the solutions are properly implemented and guide the direction of application development. Auditability has also played a key role, with large customers auditing the solution and confirming its strong security.

"With improved monitoring, issues can be addressed before they affect customers."Timo Ainali, CTO

Proactive Monitoring: Modern monitoring allows problems to be detected and fixed before service issues reach the customer. Quality has improved, and incidents have decreased.

  • Improved SLA: Cloud migration has significantly improved system reliability compared to the data center era.

  • Flexibility and Testing: Thanks to cloud infrastructure, new locations have been quickly deployed. Separate test environments enhance flexible system testing.

  • Faster Development: API Gateway, HSM, and other ready-made AWS services speed up development and technology choices.

  • Continuous Maintenance, Monitoring, and Updates: The Landing Zone is continuously maintained and updated. We monitor and operate the cloud-based systems 24/7, ensuring iLOQ’s cloud platform remains current and adapts to the ever-changing business needs.

  • Efficient Collaboration: Success is easy to celebrate when collaboration is seamless. Experts from both organizations have been able to work directly with each other, and both teams have functioned well together. It helps that everyone is solution-focused and aims to improve the way things are done.
