challenge & Vision

From 2021, Suur-Savon Sähkö has embarked on a large-scale business-driven cloud migration as part of their vision for the future of digitalisation. The main objective was to build new cloud-native applications, but the overall vision would also include the modernisation of the traditional data centre infrastructure and, with a partial migration to the cloud, IoT and e.g. real-time data processing and analytics.

Suur-Savon Sähko's vision for digitalisation until 2025.

"The challenge was to find a cost-effective and scalable solution for leveraging business data in the cloud. The business had identified several use cases where data collected from different sources could be used in production and business processes, hence the urgency to find out. We did not have the expertise to design and implement a cloud solution ourselves, we decided to look for a suitable partner to support our cloud migration."

- Pekka Nurmi, ICT Manager, Suur-Savon Sähkö

The aim is to steer operations more strongly with data and, together with partners, develop Järvi-Suomi's digital expertise and technological capability. The aim is to bring intelligence safely into electricity and heating networks, which will enable timely maintenance and more secure energy supply.

As a first practical project, Suur-Savon Sähkö had an acute need to move its AI solution to Azure. However, it was realised that a new issue could not be taken forward on the terms of a single project and the need for a holistic cloud management model was identified. The company's own expertise was limited, so it was necessary to find a reliable partner. Cloud2 was selected as the specialist in cloud infrastructure and the project is being carried out in cooperation with other partners.

"In selecting the partner, we focused on their expertise in different cloud environments and traditional infrastructure, as well as their comprehensive understanding of security. We kept in mind that in the future, data may reside in different cloud environments, and in order to manage this effectively and securely, we would need not only a competent partner, but also a holistic cloud management model."

solution

The co-operation between Suur-Savon Sähkön and Cloud2 started by developing a cloud management model for the customer using Cloud2's pre-developed platform. The management model defined the cloud design principles, which guided the building of Azure LandingZone using Cloud2's ready automation. At the same time, it was determined how the overall cloud management will be managed and how responsibilities will be distributed. The project was based on a security-sensitive red thread. In the future, new services can be securely developed on top of the LandingZone implementation.

"A carefully designed management model that is scalable across different cloud environments allows us to react securely, quickly and in a controlled manner when new needs arise. Cloud implementations are designed and executed in close collaboration with Cloud2 and system providers. Without a governance model, this collaboration is difficult to manage in a way that ensures that the different solutions are built and maintained in a consistent and seamless way. As Cloud2 is our cloud partner, they are involved in the design of our new solutions from the very beginning. This also ensures that the governance model works in all situations.

The cloud partner's help in the technical design and implementation of the environments has been particularly important in the early stages, as the company's own in-house expertise in cloud technologies is still developing. With the help of competent partners, most pitfalls are avoided and the wheel does not have to be reinvented. At the same time, it ensures that the implementations are secure and reasonably maintainable. For example, defined policies at the LandingZone level ensure that the cloud resources created will certainly follow the agreed secure implementation."

benefits

With Cloud2's ready-made, developed platform, the cloud management model was created in a week. With these specifications, its technical implementation, LandingZone, was created in Azure using Terraform automation. The easy and fast start-up created clear cost efficiencies for Suur-Savon Sähkö, while ensuring a secure and managed migration to the cloud.

"By using Terraform automation to maintain and build cloud environments, the likelihood of human error is significantly reduced. At the same time, it ensures that environments are compliant and easier to maintain in the future. By also leveraging Azure DevOps and the CI/CD pipelines found there, we enable application developers to have a modern and fast way to do the necessary application development and maintenance."
